The chalking of your door is an old Epiphanytide tradition, where we ask God to bless our home at Epiphany and to protect us from evil spirits. We invite Jesus to be a guest in our house and to share our lives everyday.
The door of our house is marked with 20 + C + M + B + 19 to denote the year 2019 and the initials of the three wise men, namely Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. C M B are also the abbreviations for the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat, which means ‘May Christ Bless this House’. The + signs represent crosses.
