THE FITZSIMMON ENSEMBLE

Jenny Galloway – Oboe

Benjamin Hudson – Bassoon

Cath Yates – Violin

Raymond Lester – Viola

Damion Brown – Cello

This year, this dynamic Manchester-based ensemble bring us two works featuring woodwind instruments. Britten composed his Phantasy Quartet, Op. 2, as an 18-year-old student at The Royal College of Music. The piece is in the form of a 16th century fantasy and has elements of the English pastoral style, which Britten was later to reject. Following on from this we shall hear Franz Krommer’s Bassoon Quartet in Bb, Op. 41 No.1, a work which exploits the full three-octave range of the bassoon to dramatic effect.

Eleni, mae’r ensemble deinamig yma o Fanceinion yn cyflwyno dau gyfansoddiad sydd yn rhoi’r flaenoriaeth i offerynnau chwythbrennol. Cyfansoddodd Britten ei Phantasy Quartet, Op. 2, pan oedd yn fyfyriwr deunaw oed yn y Coleg Brenhinol. Mae’r gwaith mewn ffurff ffantasi o’r unfed ganrif ar bymtheg ac yn cynnwys elfennau o’r arddull fugeiliol Saesnig, a drodd Britten ei gefn arni hi yn ddiweddarach. THE FESTIVAL LECTURE

Dr Rhian Davies, Director of the Gregynog Festival

‘Communicating loveliness to others’- the musical patronage of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies of Gregynog.

The Davies sisters were Welsh philanthropists and patrons of the arts who derived their wealth from the businesses created by their grandfather, the industrialist David Davies. As well as creating one of the most important private collections of art in Britain, which they donated to the National Museum of Wales, from 1933 to 1938 they sponsored the Gregynog Music Festival which played host to many important composers and musicians of the period. In 1988 the festival was revived and continues now under the direction of Dr Rhian Davies.

Roedd y chwiorydd Davies yn wragedd dyngarol ac yn noddwyr hael i’r celfyddydau. Etifeddon eu cyfoeth o’r busnesau a grëwyd gan eu taid, y diwydianwr David Davies. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn gwahoddwyd llawer o gyfansoddwyr a cherddorion pwysig i gymryd rhan yn yr ŵyl. Ym 1988 ail-sefydlwyd yr ŵyl, sydd yn parhau hyd heddiw o dan gyfarwyddyd Dr Rhian Davies.

THE MARIAN CONSORT

Rory McCleery – Director

‘Music for the Queen of Heaven’

The award-winning singers of The Marian Consort explore common ground between contemporary music for choir and the marginalised voices of the past through texts devoted to the Virgin Mary. The music of Renaissance nun Raffaella Aleotti, who was described as ‘not human, but truly an angelic spirit’, is heard alongside two works by Vicente Lusitano, who while known principally in his lifetime as a music theorist is also notable for being the first published black composer. Threaded between these are contemporary responses from both exciting new talents and revered figures of the twentieth century, including Anna Semple, Howard Skempton, Rebecca Clarke, Benjamin Britten and James MacMillan, and the World Premiere of a new piece by Chloe Knibbs.

Mae cantorion y Marian Consort, sydd bellach wedi ennill llawer o wobrau, yn ymchwilio i’r cysylltiadau sydd rhwng cerddoriaeth gyfoes ar gyfer côr a’r lleisiau oedd ar gyrion cymdeithas yn y gorffennol, trwy gymharu gosodiaidau o eiriau yn ymwneud â’r Forwyn Fair. O gyfnod y Dadeni, clywir cerddoriaeth gan y lleian Raffaella Aleotti, oedd yn cael ei disgrifio fel ysbryd angylaidd, ochr yn ochr â dau ddarn gan Vicente Lusitano, y cyfansoddwr du cyntaf erioed i gael ei waith mewn print. I gyferbynnu â’r rhain, clywir atebion cyfoes gan dalentau cyffrous newydd a chyfansoddwyr enwog yr ugeinfed ganrif, gan gynnwys Anna Semple, Howard Skempton, Rebecca Clarke, Benjamin Britten a James MacMillan, a’r perfformiad cyntaf erioed o waith newydd gan Chloe Knibbs.
